Functional Medicine In Context

Join the Movement!

We are establishing the future of medicine now

WITS Functional Medicine is pioneering efforts to make functional medicine widely accessible in African countries. There is a major shift in the healthcare industry from a reactive approach to a proactive practice of disease prevention. Physicians were historically trained to 'give a pill for every ill' without adequate tools to help a patient move from 'dis-ease to ease'. Skyrocketing rates of chronic disease incidence and ever-increasing use of prescription medications have put a strain on economies around the world and patient outcomes are becoming more unfavorable. Our goal is to educate practitioners on best practices for disease prevention and management using the Functional Medicine model.

Our Professional Affilliations

  • What’s the biggest difference between conventional and functional medicine?

Functional medicine seeks to find the root causes of a disease rather than treating symptoms for temporary relief. Conventional physicians are trained to make a diagnosis and treat that diagnosis based on standard protocols for the disease without much consideration for the bio-individuality of the patient or the environment within which the disease exists. The same issue, if approached by someone trained in functional medicine, would likely instigate a conversation with the patient about what environmental, genetic, and lifestyle factors may be contributing to their disease state. More so, numerous factors — poor diet, inactivity, hormonal imbalances, chronic inflammation — can have an impact on numerous parts of the body simultaneously.

  • Does taking a course in Functional medicine count towards a medical degree or credential?

A functional medicine training is not a standalone degree. Think of it more as postgraduate education. Physicians, osteopaths, chiropractors, nurses, naturopaths, nutritionists, and others can attend functional medicine courses to build on their education and expertise to sharpen their clinical skills and most importantly improve their patient outcomes.

  • What types of certifications can I get?

Upon completing any of our trainings, you’ll receive a certificate for completing the course. However, completing all three functional medicine practitioner training courses (FxMed 101, 102 and 103), you will qualify for board certification by our medical advisory board as a certified Functional Medicine Practitioner C-FMP.

  • How do I become a WITS Certified Functional Medicine practitioner?

FxMed 101, a 3-month introductory course in functional medicine is the first step. Here, professionals learn the underlying philosophies, diagnostic systems, and protocols for identifying and treating the root causes of disease. Then practitioners can enroll for FxMed 102 which includes specialized courses on topics such as cardiology, immunology, gastroenterology, hormonal balance, detoxification, and energy regulation. Completion of FxMed 101, 102 and a 3-month clinical immersion practicum with a certified practice are the requirements for board certification.

  • How many hours per week should I expect for course work?

We have ensured that the curriculum is broken down into short manageable pieces. Live classes typically take 90minutes, the video lessons are about 30 minutes or less, and we expect required readings and quizzes to take about 3 hours. Overall, we anticipate a total of 5 to 6 hours per week of course work.

  • Do I have to travel to attend courses in person?

No, you will not have to travel for any of our courses. While some training programs require that you attend in-person trainings, our program is delivered virtually, so you can learn from the comfort of your home or office.

  • How long does each course take to complete?

Each of our foundational courses will run over 3 months, but you have up to 2 years to complete all trainings in order to get board certified. The board certification can be achieved in as little as 9 months if all courses are completed back to back.
